Paul Shaffer disappointedly tells us that plans to release the 2005 tribute concert to Mike Smith on D-V-D fell through "at the last minute." The Letterman bandleader spearheaded the show, headlined by British stars Peter and Gordon, The Zombies and Billy J. Kramer to raise funds for the paralyzed former Dave Clark Five singer, who died in February.
Neil Young covered The Beatles' "A Day in the Life" during a tour stop in Paris last week.
John Mellencamp will tour Australia and New Zealand in November and December. He did his first U-S date Saturday in Milwaukee and resumes the tour July 8th in Philadelphia.
KISS paid a visit to the troops stationed at the Spangdahlem [pr: SPANG-duh-lem] Air Base in Germany last Thursday on the way to their show in Luxembourg. KISS wrapped up their European tour last night in Belgium. They begin a run of four U-S dates on August 4th in Sturgis, South Dakota.
Elton John held his 10th annual White Tie and Tiara Ball, which benefits his AIDS Foundation, last Thursday at his estate outside London. This year's theme was beach culture, and who better to provide the entertainment than Brian Wilson. Guests included former president Bill Clinton, Elizabeth Hurley, Elle Macpherson, Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith, and Kelly Osbourne.
Santana moved their show last Thursday in Slovakia to last night because of inclement weather. Their next show is tonight in Verona, Italy.

George Benson mixed his classic hits "On Broadway" and "Give Me the Night" with a series of jazz numbers during his show Friday night at the M-E-N Arena in Manchester, England.
Before appearing in such classic 1960s films as Cat Ballou and The Dirty Dozen, Lee Marvin was a T-V star. His '50s detective series M-Squad will be released as a box set this September.
Otis Williams says The Temptations will be "extra busy" in 2009, as they're involved with special concerts and re-issues tied to Motown's 50th anniversary.
Mark Knopfler and his band are back to full strength as multi-instrumentalist John McCusker has joined the North American tour after resolving visa problems that had left him in the U-K. Knopfler is in Portland, Oregon tonight.
Southside Johnny, John Waite, Chris Thompson of Manfred Mann and Terry Reid are among the singers featured on The Common Thread, the new album by Procol Harum lyricist Keith Reid. It's out in August.

Allman Brothers drummer Jaimoe and his Jasssz Band have three dates scheduled for this month before the Brothers hit the road in August. They'll play this Friday at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, New Jersey; Saturday at the Fairfield Theater Company in Fairfield, Connecticut; and July 18th at Mexicali Blues in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Bruce Springsteen did the tour premiere of "I'm a Rocker" Monday night in Belgium. He performs in Milan, Italy tonight.
Joe Cocker took time out from his tour with Steve Miller last night to play a benefit for his Cocker Kids' Foundation in Hotchkiss, Colorado. The Subdudes opened. Cocker and Miller are in Muskegon, Michigan tomorrow night.
Paul McCartney has called on Britons to adopt "meat-free Mondays" to cut carbon emissions. He says, "A meat-free Monday is like going to the gym -- with the advantage of protecting the planet."
An online petition urging Diana Ross to reunite with surviving '60s Supremes members Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong has drawn more than 18-hundred names. It's posted at GoPetition-dot-com.
Peter Frampton will be in Nashville next Tuesday to announce this year's inductees for the Musicians Hall of Fame. The legendary guitarist performed at last year's ceremonies, which honored session-men from Nashville, Detroit and L-A as well as The Blue Moon Boys (Elvis Presley's original band) and The Tennessee Two (Johnny Cash's backup group). The Hall's 2008 inductions will be held in Nashville on October 28th.

Russell Thompkins Junior and his New Stylistics group have a pair of New York dates this summer. On July 24th, they'll open for Smokey Robinson at Asser Levy Park near Coney Island, and on August 2nd, they'll headline a pair of shows at B-B King's in Times Square.
We hear that a complete box set of The Flintstones, covering all six of the legendary animated series' seasons, will be released before the holiday season.
R-E-O Speedwagon's Soundstage performance, Live in the Heartland (2008), starts airing on P-B-S today (Thursday).
Cheap Trick will do three Midwest shows this week before hooking up with Journey and Heart next Wednesday in suburban Denver for a summer tour. They are in Peoria, Illinois tonight (Thursday); Manistee, Michigan tomorrow (Friday); and Milwaukee on Saturday.
Tommy James is taking the 4th of July off -- but he'll be back on stage with The Shondells on Saturday at the Summer Fun Festival in Hudson, Florida.
Gladys Knight went outside her usual songbook as she closed out this year's Ottawa Jazz Festival. The Doors, Ray Charles, Ike and Tina Turner, Mama Cass, Joan Baez and Judy Collins are among the musical guest stars as The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour comes to D-V-D. 11 episodes from the topical and controversial C-B-S variety series' third season are the basis of a five-D-V-D set available online August 1st from TimeLife. The collection includes comedy guest stars George Carlin, Bob Newhart, Jonathan Winters and David Steinberg.
Billy Joel Day was officially declared yesterday (Thursday) by Governor Jodi Rell of Connecticut to salute the "Piano Man"'s unprecedented 10 consecutive sellout shows at the state's Mohegan Sun Casino.
The making of the Beatles' film Magical Mystery Tour is the subject of a D-V-D coming out September 2nd. Magical Mystery Tour Memories features several people who participated in the production, including musician Spencer Davis, Sir Paul's younger brother Mike McCartney and actor Victor Spinetti -- he also co-starred in A Hard Day's Night and Help. The hour-long documentary also draws from previously unseen home movies.
Meat Loaf starts his European tour tonight (Friday) in Plymouth, England. The tour runs through August 16th in Denmark.
Levon Helm, a member of Ringo Starr's first All-Starr Band in 1989, joined his former boss on stage the other night at Radio City Music Hall in New York during "With a Little Help From My Friends." Dr. John, also a member of that first All-Starr Band, joined in on the same song in Connecticut.
